Meaing of colours
Colours can have different meaning and symbolism depending on the country and culture. Here we will look at the colour meaning in Bulgarian clothing and embroidery.
Red
The main colour in Bulgarian embroidery is red, more specifically scarlet red. It symbolises life, war and blood, truth, peace and love. It is also a symbol of the blood of the mother and the beginning of new life and because of that in the past very often babies were wrapped in red diapers and brides were wearing red veils. Lastly, it is believed that the red colour protects from evil eye and magic. Red thread is also very often tied on the wrist to protect from the evil eye, especially on newborn babies.
Green
Green is the colour associated with Mother Nature, new and eternal life and is also connected with the Tree of life - a symbol of the Universe.
Blue
Blue is perceived as the angelic colour that depicts the sky, sea and water. It also personifies truth and trust, purity and cleanliness, calmness and reflection/contemplation.
White
White symbolises purity, sanctity, youth, innocence and the light of God.
Yellow
Yellow is the symbol of gold, Sun, source of happiness and joy, fire, light and the afterlife and the deceased.
Black and brown
Black and brown are the colours representing the Earth. They symbolise stability, security, and fertility.
