Three Well-Designed Objects

This is my first post which will focus on three designed objects in my everyday life that I believe are well-designed.

Wireless Mouse

When I was deciding what wireless mouse to buy I had a few criteria:

  • Silent
  • Good size to avoid wrist pain due to previous injury
  • Nice visual design

This mouse was specifically advertised as silent and ergonomic. It is also rechargeable with good battery life and compatible with different laptop and computer types. After using it for the first few times I was confident this was the right mouse for me. I specifically liked the soft and quiet sound of the mouse along with the design of height and size. It was a perfect fit for my hand, which after several hours of using was not causing any pain to my wrist. The texture of the mouse was also very well-designed by making a balance between a matt and glossy finish.

Another feature that I like is the changing light around the edges and creases of the mouse. Based on personal preferences there is a button, conveniently positioned below the roller button, for quickly turning on/off the light effect. Lastly, as it is a wireless mouse that connects via Bluetooth, the buttons, the USB receiver slot and the charging port were nicely positioned on the bottom of it without disturbing the design or creating uneven surfaces on the top surface of the mouse.

Coffee/Tea Mugs by TYPO

The second object I believe is very well designed is the ‘Daily Mugs’ by the brand TYPO. They have hundreds of different designs and phrases that are up to date with current trends and topics as well as ‘timeless’ expressions that are still relatable to people from different ages, genders and backgrounds. Despite the various designs to choose from, what I like the most is that they focused on using one shape with specific dimensions for this mug which are applied to all designs. The size and shape are nothing extravagant or unusual, in fact, they use the most simple design for a mug that has been used by many others over the years and has proven to be preferred by customers. They are easy to hold, the size is a great fit and the various designs on the mugs are what makes them stand out from their competitors.

This creates a great opportunity for customers to purchase different mugs while having the same size and shape across all of them making an aesthetically pleasing collection of mugs. Conveniently the bottom edge is designed in a way that allows the mugs to be stacked on top of each other for better display and/or storage.

Ring Holder

The last item I think is well-designed is the ring holder I got from the British Museum. I really like that it is solid and heavy, which makes it harder to tip over, unlike others I have seen or had. The design of an elephant also makes it a nice decoration and even when I don’t use it to stack my rings it is not just a simple and empty object but adds to the overall look of my room, and the yellow colour gives a nice and warm feeling. The part that is used to hold the rings – ‘the trunk’ – at first glance may not seem very functional but in my opinion, does the same as any other ring holder. The curve to it surprisingly doesn’t hinder how the rings stack and it also creates a nice visual.
